VAST, SLENDER BOUNDARIES
(2024)
Pheobe riley Law & Jez riley French
VAST, SLENDER BOUNDARIES - traces that ask us to reconsider the role of perception when listening to environments, their non-human inhabitants, and our effects on them. We invite your ears inside the micro-worlds of moss, tree roots, ants nests, bee hives, coral dissolving, glacier ice releasing air trapped for thousands of years, and to locales interacting with shifting communities.

Blankets, oceanic layers across place. Symbiotic colonisations, sonically intense, revealing their vast, shifting micro-environments.
Moss Listening features recordings (traces) of the inner sounds of common moss species, the soil horizons they maintain and myhychorizal shifts, recorded with self-built microphones. Organ tones mirror systems of circulation and flow, alongside performative objects and touch referencing climate stress and re-connection.

Hannah Pezzack's essay 'Under the Spell of the Sensuous' is now available via hethem.nl & features a response to 'moss listening' performed by myself & Jez riley French at Sonic Acts
"The Spell of the Sensuous: Perception and Language in a More-Than-Human World by David Abram is a defining text in ecological thought. Revisiting the seminal work nearly 30 years after it was published, Amsterdam-based British writer Hannah Pezzack explores its themes of animism, entanglement, and sensorial encounters."

Machine Equities
reimagining kinship with machines
(2023)
Installation: Sound, film and text
(on-going series)
installation - Here Becomes Elsewhere exhibition, Fabrica, Italy - Feb 2023
Machine Equities is a sound-focused performance installation, featuring various ear-worm QR codes placed around Fabrica. It explores machine technologies as collaborators; our relationship with them, other ways to consider their aesthetic value, potential rights and future narratives. The piece unfolds through symbiosis / mimesis, exposing an otherworld of sonic interactions often ignored in the present and objectified in designing futures.
As we filter out the sounds of machines, we learn to find them irritating or eventually forget theu are there. By sounding alongside machines we can consider their agency and how we might, through a perceptual shift, find hoovers sonically enjoyable, or air conditioning as comforting as our own humming. Can we and should we begin to develop sonic landscapes with equity for machines and their AI controllers?

Elements venture into more invisible forms of terrestrial signals; outmoded technologies, normally inaudible threads of radio, internet and electromagnetic waves mapping across spaces. A collection of answer-phone recordings between myself and my dad are a personal reflection, symbolic of private phone systems, tape-based answerphones, structures of soft memory. Generative virtual synthesisers as a mode of net-based transmission alongside the empty sound track of film stock. Field recordings of inter-species communication and our humorous attempts at imitation, of telephone lines along the humber, and cello, with its set of connections between personal histories, location and experience

curated by Pheobe riley Law and Jez riley French
Following on from the first collection, for over borders #2 artists / composers were asked to send scores that, somehow, can use the act of walking as a way to question the objectification of environments and the role of 'stepping back' from a human centric view of place. This publication began as an idea to share some of the scores* by myself & my dad, Jez riley French, connected to the concept or effects of borders, which we then expanded to include work by others in our creative communities. Artists / composers were asked to send scores (photographic scores,text scores, graphic scores) that, in some way, referenced border; social, political, virtual, perceptual, environmental or between species. Our thanks to all those who responded with their work.

I have a new piece 'ewer (soaks in)' from the 'herd' series included in the online exhibition 'Refracted Commentary' at Shipley Gallery, Gateshead.
The piece explores themes of regulation, normalisation, and separation within barriers between humans and animals with a focus on the farming industry of cattle. I was interested in the process of making with clay, and how the 'unfinished' state can shape our perception of an object
/////A Layer of Liquid Water/////
a new sound piece for Spikersuppa Lydgalleri, Oslo, Norway - Jan-Feb 2021
amongst the references there are ones to borders;
between the liquid & the frozen
the solid and the porous state of walls along a cattle run
and between narrative and the shape of language as a sounding object.
Working on this piece, during a year where plans were constantly being shifted, created pockets of time that seemed to drift between the day-to-day and a suspended sense of progression. With ‘A layer of liquid water’ I attempt to explore the aesthetics of certain located sounds; the memories contained in recordings from earlier trips to Oslo and through others which reference ideas of the static and the transitory (restriction and movement). I have an interest in words as sound, with their meanings more fluid, and this became an important, refreshing element of the piece.
Lots of thanks to Jenny Berger Myhre and Line Elkjær for their readings of the texts.

'The Climate Symphony was developed in our own CPH:LAB and has its premiere in an audiovisual live concert with musicians from the Danish Chamber Orchestra, where the audience will experience humanity's influence on Earth over 12,000 years. From evolution to revolution, from survival to progress, wealth and war. The issues affecting our climate are tonight represented by the orchestra's instruments in an interplay with the voices from nature's many habitats. In the meantime, a collage of archive footage and images is projected, which make up fragments of our memory and the visual detritus of human history.

three soundworks for 'Benjamin', Radio Papesse tram shelter transmission project, Florence, Italy - October 2019
Benjamin. Sounds from the tramway , a sound art festival that will occupy the shelters of the Florentine urban tram, from 10 to 13 October 2019 .
Waiting for the next tram - between one service announcement and another - the travelers - urban commuters, residents and visitors - will become public: surprise, participation, interaction, dialogue, disorientation, fun , are the goals that Radio Papesse will try to achieve with a schedule of audio works - selected via Open Call - that talk about travel and waiting. The goal is to transport travelers into an unsettling, surprising elsewhere , to live - even for a few seconds - the experience of places, real or imaginary, far away, contrasting with what they see from the tram stop.
